In the FedExCup format, the PGA TOUR season is divided into two elements:

1. PGA TOUR Regular Season

2. Playoffs for the FedExCup

 At the conclusion of the Regular Season, the Top 125 players in the FedExCup standings will qualify to compete in the PGA TOUR Playoffs. These Top 125 players will be eligible to play at the first round of the Playoffs at The Barclays in New York. From the points totaled at the Barclays, the Top 100 players will be eligible to play at the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston. After the Deutsche Bank Championship, the Top 70 players will be eligible to play at the BMW Championship in Carmel, IN. Ultimately, the last stop of the playoffs will be THE TOUR Championship in Atlanta, where the Top 30 players from the previous event will be competing.

Upon the completion of the BMW Championship, the 30 players who are eligible to move on to THE TOUR Championship will have their scores re-set ensuring that all 30 players in the field will have a mathematical chance of winning the FedExCup. The Top 10 seeds after the points have been reset for THE TOUR Championship have an excellent chance at winning The FedExCup with a victory at THE TOUR Championship, and the Top 5 seeds will win the FedExCup outright with a win. This gives all the players the chance to win the overall competition, which boasts a prize purse of $10 million.

The BMW Championship has been a permanent fixture on the FedExCup schedule since its introduction, and will once again welcome the top 70 pros from the 2012 PGA TOUR season to Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, IN.
